Game 2 of GSL senior women's finals goes tonight at the dome

The second match of the Glengarry Soccer League's senior women's indoor final series is scheduled for tonight, March 27, at the Alexandria dome, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Dunvegan won the opener over Alexandria and could clinch the title tonight, though Alexandria will be looking to say something about that and extend the series to game three, which would be played Thursday.

Char-Lan rep hockey teams in Tuesday night playoff action

Char-Lan Rebels rep. 'B' hockey teams are in action tonight, including one game in Maxville, where the novice Rebs will take on the Kemptville Panthers, at 6 p.m.

In Williamstown, the atom Rebels will play at 7 p.m., versus the Kemptville Panthers, and at 9:30 p.m., the major midgets will tangle with Brockville Braves.

All of these games are part of their respective UCMHL championship series. 

Char-Lan's bantams bowed out in the semifinal round, bounced by the Kemptville Panthers five points to one.

The peewee Rebels finished as league playoff finalists, succumbing five points to one, to the Brockville Braves.

All five Char-Lan rep. hockey teams qualified for playoff action this season, despite the league reducing the number of playoff qualifiers to the top four in each division. 

Game 7 between junior A Colts and Hawks goes tonight in Hawkesbury

Tonight, the season will come to an end for one junior 'A' hockey team, while the other moves on to the second round of CCHL playoffs. Game seven for the Cornwall Colts and Hawkesbury Hawks will take place at the Robert Hartley Complex, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Colts have twice staved off elimination, having won the last two games to even the series.

On Sunday, it was a 4-3 overtime triumph, as Cameron Hebert’s second goal of the game was the winner. Cornwall's Noah Williams and Alex Wilkins also scored. For the Hawks, Kieran Craig (of Alexandria), Chris Smith, and Nicolas Guillemette were the marksmen. Craig also picked up an assist.

The Hawks outshot the Colts 49-41, with Liam Lascelle making 47 saves for the victory. 

Three stars were first Cameron Hebert (COR), second Liam Lascelle (COR), and third Kieran Craig (HAW).

Last Friday, it took double overtime for Cornwall to prevail, as the Colts won in Hawkesbury, 3-2. 

Amongst the county crew in the game, Craig scored for Hawkesbury, and Ethan Mulhearn found the net for Cornwall. Simon Besner picked up an assist for the Hawks, and David A. Poirier chalked one up for the Colts. 

AAA minor bantam Wild claim league championship

The Eastern Ontario Wild minor bantam AAA hockey team is the 2018 HEO league playoff championship, clinching the crown on March 24 with a 5-2 win over the Ottawa Jr. 67s. 

The Wild squad of 2004 birth year players includes Summerstown's Connor MacDonald, on defence.

 

Sunday sports schedule: soccer, skating, hockey

It's a busy day in the county sports scene.

This morning at the dome, two girls soccer playoff champions will be crowned. The GSL's U13 title tilt goes at 9 a.m., followed by the U16 girls match at 10 a.m.

This afternoon in Williamstown, at 2 p.m., the Char-Lan Skating Club will hold its annual showcase to cap off the season.

Back up north later, the bantam rep. 'B' Glens hockey team can claim the UCMHL championship with a win or tie, entering the contest with two victories to their credit. The start time at the Palace is set for 5:30 p.m., with Kemptville providing the opposition.

At 7 p.m., Alexandria's midget house hockey team will also be vying for a league crown, on home ice.

In Cornwall, the Glengarry-laden CCHL (junior 'A' hockey) playoff series between the Colts and Hawkesbury Hawks continues, with game six at the Civic Complex. That's a 7 p.m. start, with the Colts facing a must-win situation to extend the series.

Here's an update on home playoff games for Char-Lan minor hockey teams. Unless otherwise noted, matches are played in Williamstown, at the Char-Lan Rec. Centre.

Today (March 24):

Colts win in double OT to extend CCHL playoff series with Hawks

Last night in Hawkesbury, Josh Barnes of the Cornwall Colts scored 9:20 into the second overtime period to give his team a 3-2 victory over the Hawks.

The win staved off elimination for the Colts, who will again face a do-or-die situation in game six at the Cornwall Civic Complex, on Sunday, March 25, starting at 7 p.m. The Hawks, with a win, will advance to the next round of CCHL playoffs, currently leading the series three games to two.

The marathon in Hawkesbury saw the county's own Ethan Mulhearn open the scoring for Cornwall 4:20 into the contest, before Kieran Craig, who hails from Alexandria and plays for the Hawks, scored to tie nine minutes later. North Lancaster native Simon Besner set up Colin Stevens for Hawkesbury's go-ahead tally later in the frame.

After a scoreless second stanza, county boy David A. Poirier assisted Cameron Hebert's equalizer for Cornwall, at the 15:03 mark of the third.

Should the Colts prevail on Sunday night, the series will go to a game seven back in Hawkesbury on Tuesday.

Crybaby Cup hockey tournament hits the ice Saturday in Maxville

The traditional end to the men's recreational hockey season is scheduled for Saturday in Maxville, with the Crybaby Cup tournament.

Round-robin action is slated for hourly starts, from 11 a.m. through 3 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the fifth- and fourth-place teams will battle, with the loser's day coming to an end, while the winner advances to the B final at 7 p.m. versus the third-place team.

In between, at 2 p.m., the A final will take place, with the top two teams colliding.

Bantam Glens drop puck on title series tonight on home ice

The Alexandria Bantam 'B' Glens are vying for the UCMHL championship, with the series opening tonight on home ice at the Palace. The five-point series will then hit the road tomorrow, before returning to Alexandria for Sunday action, at 5:30 p.m.

Char-Lan major midgets advance to UCMHL finals

The fourth-seeded Char-Lan major midget rep. 'B' hockey team will play for the UCMHL championship, after having dispatched first-place South Dundas.

The Rebels won the series six points to two (actually only needing five to advance).

After opening the semifinals with a 6-3 loss, Char-Lan went on to win the next three games, on scores of 5-3, 3-1, and 2-0.

The boys will play Brockville in the final series, starting on the road as early as Sunday and then likely back in Williamstown on Monday evening. Once confirmed, we will post the complete schedule of games.

Junior A Colts face do-or-die tonight in Hawkesbury

The CCHL (junior 'A') hockey season could come to an end tonight in Hawkesbury for the Cornwall Colts, as the Hawks hold a 3-1 lead in games, in the opening-round playoff series.

Last night, in Cornwall, the Hawks grabbed a commanding lead in the series, with a 3-1 victory in game four.

All four goals were scored in the third period, with J.D. Pogue notching the lone Colts marker. That goal tied the game 1-1, but Hawkesbury reclaimed the lead the for good only 49 seconds later, before sealing the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute of play.

Hawks tallies came from Kari Belac (2) and Alex Beaudin-Tougas.

The county's Ethan Mulhearn picked up an assist on the Cornwall goal.

Game five is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex, in Hawkesbury.

If Cornwall wins to extend the series, the sixth match will go at the civic complex on Sunday evening, starting at 7 p.m.

Char-Lan major midget hockey team draws even in playoff series

Last night in Williamstown, Char-Lan's major midget hockey team drew even in its playoff series with South Dundas, and we have the story in this week's edition of The Glengarry News.
