Jr A Colts to honour Royals legend on March 8, also in action on home ice tonight

sean Feb 27, 2018 - 3:15pm

Capping off a busy final stretch of play in the CCHL, the Cornwall Colts junior 'A' hockey team will, on March 8, will pay tribute to local hockey icon Dave Ezard in the pre-game ceremony.

A new banner will be unveiled, recognizing Ezard’s retired number 6. The original banner dedicated to Ezard disappeared from the Civic Complex a few seasons ago.

Ezard patrolled the blueline for his hometown Royals from 1975 to 1980. He earned the 1980 Memorial Cup MVP. The D-man was also the first Quebec league defenceman to score 40 goals (105 points) in 1979-80.

Sadly, Ezard passed away in 1995, at the young age of 36. Shortly after, the Cornwall Colts retired Ezard’s number 6 and unveiled a banner that hung from the rafters at the Si Miller Arena and then the Ed Lumley Arena.

Members of Ezard’s family and former teammates will be in attendance for the rededication ceremony on March 8, at 7:30 p.m.

BREAKING NEWS: Cornwall Nationals pro hockey team announces immediate shutdown

sean Feb 20, 2018 - 4:43pm

Cornwall's professional hockey team, the Nationals of the Federal Hockey League, today announced it would cease operations effective immediately. Here's the club's press release:

The Cornwall Nationals of the Federal Hockey League have ceased operations, effective immediately.

"This is a really sad day for hockey in Cornwall," said Rodney Rivette, owner/president. "Unfortunately, due to our financial situation, we can no longer continue."

Saturday night's attendance was announced at 358 in what turned out to be the team's last game at the Ed Lumley Arena inside the civic complex.

"We've exhausted every avenue possible to save the team," said Rivette. "This is so unfortunate because owner Will Beauvais has done everything possible to make this work."

The organization would like to thank its small but loyal fan base as well as all local sponsors and volunteers.

The Nats have had Glengarry connections over their short tenure in the Seaway City, including current head coach Joel Trottier, of Alexandria. This was the club's second year of operations, following on the heels of the Cornwall River Kings, which played in the Quebec-based LNAH.
