New photo galleries: high school hockey, men's indoor soccer, youth flag football

Three new galleries of photos have been added to our website, including images from the Jan. 10 high school boys hockey tournament, a Jan. 11 men's indoor soccer match between the Bar Flies and McCrimmon, and Sunday's start of the youth flag football season at the dome. Junior 'A' Colts felled by Senators

The Ottawa Jr. Senators showed why they’re one of the top junior 'A' hockey teams in Canada, scoring a 5-2 Thursday night win over the Colts, at the Ed Lumley Arena.

The Jr. Senators came into the game sixth overall in the country and now own a record of 35-6-1-2 (73 points).

JD Pogue (14) and Keegan Mulhearn (12) each had a goal for the Colts.  

The Jr. Sens outshot the Colts 33-26, with Michael Carr taking the loss.

Cornwall's record drops to 22-16-4-1 (49 points), leaving them in a tie for fourth in the CCHL standings.

Hardest Working Colts Player honours went to the newest Colts defenceman, Alex Wilkins. Three Stars were first Finn Evans (OTT), second  Owen Guy (OTT), and third Keegan Mulhearn (COR).

Next game is scheduled for tonight (Jan. 12) on the road against the Brockville Braves, at 7:30 p.m.

The Colts next home game is set for Thursday, January 18, when the team is slated to host the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Staff and students from CCVS will be honoured. Game time is 7:30 p.m., at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

Weather-related bus cancellations force changes to high school basketball schedule

Three days of weather-related school bus cancellations this week have taken their toll on the high school sports schedule.

Among the modifications, a number of basketball games are now scheduled to be played Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday (Jan. 15), Char-Lan DHS in Williamstown will host the following games:

  • 10 a.m. Char-Lan vs. St. Lawrence (seniors)
  • 11:30 a.m.: Char-Lan vs. St. Lawrence (juniors)
  • 1 p.m. Char-Lan vs. Tagwi (seniors)
  • 2:30 p.m. Char-Lan vs. Tagwi (juniors)

Tuesday's action will take place at GDHS in Alexandria:

  • 1 p.m. Char-Lan vs. GDHS (seniors)
  • 2:30 p.m. Char-Lan vs. GDHS (juniors)

Great day for Char-Lan's boys hockey team

Char-Lan DHS' boys hockey team iced a stellar day at the high school tournament in Morrisburg today, scoring a trio of victories. 

Holy Trinity was also in action, dropping both of its contests.

Alexandria strives to be Hockeyville in 2018

Alexandria is looking to be named Hockeyville 2018.

Some may recall a number of years back that Alexandria and the Glengarry Sports Palace reached the semifinal round of the national competition that awards a cash prize for a community improvement project.

High school girls hockey a go for Tuesday

Despite the weather-related bus cancellations today, Jan. 8, tomorrow's high school girls hockey tournament scheduled for Morrisburg is a go.

Here is the schedule for the day:

7:30 a.m.: Char-Lan vs. Seaway
8:30 a.m.: Tagwi vs. Holy Trinity
9:30 a.m.: Char-Lan vs. La Citadelle
break
noon: Tagwi vs. North Dundas
1 p.m.: Seaway vs. St. Joseph's
2 p.m.: La Citadelle vs. North Dundas

There are also two games booked for Thursday, Jan. 11, at Cornwall's multi-sport complex.

1:45 p.m.: St. Joseph's vs. Holy Trinity
3 p.m.: Char-Lan vs. St. Joseph's

Summerstown Trails official opening set for Sunday

The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) are getting ready to officially mark the start of the 2018 season. Starting at 10 a.m. on January 7, the group will host a day of family-friendly activities.

There will be free ski and snowshoe rentals, volunteers serving as guides on the trails, and hot chocolate by the fire to warm you up. Learn about events and lessons taking place this winter, and meet other trail users and members of FOTST. It's time to get excited about winter!

New this year at the trails is a bigger, relocated parking lot, adjacent to Summerstown Road. 

The Summerstown Trails offer 18 km of groomed cross-country skiing trails for both classic and skate-skiing, and a separate network of 11 km of snowshoe trails. The facility is situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401, and are open seven days a week. There is no charge to access the trails.

Junior A Colts doubled off by Rockland

Five third-period goals were too much to overcome, as the Rockland Nationals doubled the Colts 6-3 Thursday night at the Ed Lumley Arena.

The night could be summed up at the 13:47 mark of the third with Liam Lascelle out of the net for the extra attacker for an upcoming Rockland penalty, when one of the Colts forwards made a drop pass from centre ice that curled into the Colts net. Rockland added two short-handed markers in the frame to seal the victory.

Tommy Tanner (with his 8th of the season) paced the Colts offence with a goal and an assist. Konnor MacCormick (14) and the newest Colts forward Noah Williams (1) also scored.  

Rockland outshot the Colts 41-22 with Liam Lascelle getting tagged with the loss.

Cornwall's record falls to 20-15-4-1 (45 points) in sixth place in the CCHL standings.

The Hardest Working Colts Player award went to Tommy Tanner. Three Stars were first Shawn Kennedy (ROC), second Trevor Coykendall (ROC), and third Tommy Tanner (COR). JD Pogue was honoured as the Colts Player of the Month.

The Colts and Nationals wrap up their home-and-home series Friday night in Rockland. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Next home game is Sunday, January 7, when they host the Kemptville 73’s. Children 12 and under receive FREE Admission to the game, which is set for a 3 p.m. start at the Ed Lumley Arena (Cornwall Civic Complex).

High school sports on hiatus this week, resume Jan. 9

High school sports teams enjoy this week off, as the Christmas schedule break continues.

The action is slated to resume on all fronts next week, with sports including girls volleyball, boys basketball, girls hockey, and boys hockey. Be sure to check out The Glengarry News for details.

Winning streak comes to an end for Alexandria Glens

Last night in Alexandria, the Glens suffered a loss to one of the league's top teams, the Athens Aeros, in the process ending Alexandria's winning streak at six games. Despite the defeat on Saturday night, the Glens have plenty to be optimistic about heading into the new year, and we will have the story in The Glengarry News.
